Suresh Sharma home theatre

A basement entertainment room, well isolated by the earth around it but resonant and uneven in the bass until treated.

Rows of red upholstered seats in a cinema auditorium facing a blank screen.
A cinema auditorium — the reference a private screening room is tuned to match.

For Mr. Suresh Sharma, Chairman of Allengers Medicare, AV Acoustics designed and treated a basement-level entertainment space at his Sector 36, Chandigarh residence. It was conceived as a private home theatre and recreational room for family and guests.

The problem

A basement gives an acoustic designer something and takes something away. The surrounding earth mass and structural containment offer inherent isolation from exterior ambient noise, so the room starts quiet. But that same containment, left untreated, produces excessive low-frequency modal resonance, flutter echo and uneven bass response — the principal enemies of accurate, cinema-grade reproduction. The room is silent and still wrong.

The symptoms are easy to recognise once pointed out. Bass that is heavy in one seat and absent in the next is a modal problem, not a subwoofer problem, and no amount of equalisation fixes it for every seat at once. Hard parallel surfaces add a fast repeating echo that blurs dialogue. Both are set by the shape of the room and the placement of treatment within it, which is why they are dealt with at design stage rather than after the equipment is installed.

What we did

  • Room-proportion analysis, to minimise problematic axial and tangential modal overlap.
  • Bass-trapping treatment at the pressure-zone corners, to control low-frequency standing-wave build-up.
  • A calibrated blend of absorptive and diffusive surface treatment across the room.

The target for that blend was a reverberation time and frequency-response profile consistent with recognised home-theatre and cinema-reference acoustic standards, rather than a room simply deadened until it sounded quiet. Diffusion earns its place here: absorption alone, applied generously, leaves a room that measures well and feels lifeless to sit in.

Keeping the room usable

Careful attention was paid to utility and functional flexibility, so the finished space serves equally as a private screening room and as a wider entertainment and recreational venue for the Sharma family. A dedicated cinema that can only be used for films is a poor return on a basement.

The result

A basement room that performs to genuine cinema-reference standards and still works as a family space — the kind of private entertainment infrastructure India's business leadership now expects.

AV Acoustics has become the acoustic design partner of choice for Tricity Chandigarh's most discerning residential clients.
